With perfect weather conditions and after yesterday’s training day, the first day of the Austrian Freeski Open 2013 took place.Thanks to the snowfalls during the last weeks and the hard working crew, the snowpark Kitzsteinhorn is in best shape.
The contest day began with the qualification of the rookies, who travelled from all over the world to compete against each other. The Kitzsteinhorn showed itself from its best side and enabled a contest without any complications. Loads of spectators followed the event either from the self-made snow stands or from comfortable deck chairs. Also food and beverage were provided, leaving nothing to be desired.
At 10.00 am the rookies started their qualification followed by the qualification of the ladies at 11.00 am. The best riders moved on to the finals after a strengthening lunch break. The rookie Andri Ragettli (SUI) could eventually ensure victory with a Both Way Swith 1080ies, followed by Marco Ladner (AUT) and Pontus Penttilä (FIN).
The award for the best trick went to the Luca Schuler (SUI) by doing a Switch Leftside Ten-Eighty.
At 1.30 pm the women’s contest went into the final round. Lisa Zimmermann (GER) could convince the judges and won the contest. The silver medal went to Katie Summerhayes (GBR) and Kelly Sildaru (EST) could take home the bronze medal.
In addition to today’s contest, Regina Rathgeb was crowned the Austrian Freeski Queen. In second place was Philo Bair and in the third place Maria Blersch.
With the rookies and women’s victory ceremony the day on the mountain slowly came to an end. It was a perfect day to kick off the Austrian Freeski Open and with the outstanding tricks presented today, we can definitely look forward to the upcoming days. Tomorrow the men will compete in the qualification for their entry into the finals.
